A friend asked me the other day what it means to be a man in 2020. I told him, it’s simple:
Be kind — but don’t be a pushover
Share your feelings — but stop being so vulnerable.
Be powerful — but not demanding.
Be strong — but not threatening.
Be assertive — but not aggressive.
Be flexible — but not passive.
He said: Easy. Anything else? Yea…
Be fearless and free.
But think things through before you leap.
Live out loud but don’t bust the speaker.
Bust your heart open but don’t be a cheater.
Pursue your passion and make a million – but be home by 5 for the children.
Live with fire — but tame the flames.
Speak your truth — but mask your shame.
He then asked: “Is that all”? Nope…
Sacrifice yourself for your family — but don’t resent them.
Play guitar like Hendrix, and fix an engine.
Feed your kids but starve your soul.
Know how to cook a steak over charcoal.
Have a 6 pack — 8 pack — screw it — a 12 pack or bust.
Drink a 6 pack – 12 pack — screw it — a keg or you suck.
Wear a Rolex — not a timex.
Drive a lexus not a Prius.
Lose weight but don’t get skinny.
Own a 60 inch TV.
He said:: “Man that’s a lot. How can I handle it?” Easy…
Meditate, but don’t get too detached.
Medicate, but don’t feel so attacked.
Be creative and make art with your life
But get a real job, have kids and a wife.
Be fun and live fully. But don’t dodge responsibility.
Go “all in” leave nothing undone or unsaid.
Be focused and persistent but don’t get so obsessed.
Don’t dwell on your past — but don’t take the time to confront it.
Don’t fixate on the future — but don’t learn how to improve it.
Be awake and question all — but cover your eyes with the wool.
Watch Sunday Night Football — but be ready for Monday.
Tie a chain’round your neck — but don’t call it slavery.
Be financially free and abundant.
Buy a house but be indebted.
Be driven but not rigid.
Generous but not timid.
Be spontaneous but not reckless.
Express fully — but suppress it.
“Look, I don’t know if I can” —
Man up but stand down.
Take orders with a smile. Don’t frown.
Watch Fight Club in a Snuggie.
Throw a punch but don’t bloody.
Take the Red Pill but don’t swallow.
Be the change but still follow.
Rage against the machine but don’t break it.
Be courageous — but stay complacent.
Speak your truth but don’t trigger
Come closer but don’t linger.
Have an opinion but agree.
Take bullets but don’t bleed.
Live forever but die young.
Be a ticking time bomb — but holster your gun.
Put on the blinders — but still see.
Have free will — but listen to me.
Are we clear?
Being a man in 2020 might seem like a collection of impossible paradoxes.
But being a king, is far simpler.
